Cologne inhabitants have shown a commitment to art for many centuries, fact proved by the great number of museums and exhibitions existing in the city. Actually very proud of its museums, Cologne becomes the focus of many travelers highly appreciating art in all its aspects.

The majority of the museums started as private collections, being extended in time and improved to a level of national importance. Here are a few tips for your selection.
The Romisch-Germanisches Museum: founded in 1946, it used to be the German and Roman History Department of the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum. It holds ample collections of artifacts of European and Rhenan art, archaeological evidence and rare pieces from the classical period, including Roman mosaic, Roman glasses and medieval jewelry.
Schnutgen Museum: bears the name of Alexander Schnutgen and is dedicated to medieval art. He initially had the idea to gather an important collection of medieval items at the beginning the 19th century, after Napoleon’s decision to close monasteries and churches, threatening the disappearance of true artistic treasures. You can admire works dating from the Carolingian period up to the Baroque Renaissance: sculptures, glass painting, ecclesiastical paintings and textiles.
Wallraf-Richartz Museum: one of the most popular picture galleries in Cologne displays a rich collection of Flemish and old German art created by Cologne local artists in the middle ages up to the Renaissance period. In addition, the museum possesses numerous Italian and Spanish works dating from the 17th century, as well as a wide selection of sculptures, graphics and miniatures, ranging Wallraf-Richartz along with the most interesting museums in Germany. 
Ostasiatische Kunst (Museum of East Asian Art): holds one of the most important Asian art collections in the world. It was opened in 1913 when the Fischer family exposed the first exhibits. Many specialists appreciate Cologne’s concern for the artistic beauty of other nations. You will remain speechless in front of some Buddhist and Japanese paintings, unique wood sculptures, colored woodcuts, Chinese bronze objects, ceramics and calligraphical early records.
Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum: founded in 1901, is a spectacular place, hiding rare ethnological items invoking old disappeared North-American civilizations but also artifacts from Thailand, Cambodia, India and Tibet. There is also an impressive exhibition of ethnological photography. 
Kölnisches Stadtmuseum or the Museum of the City of Cologne summarizes the history, culture and economy of the old city and its inhabitants. Valuable objects illustrate the life and customs of people and their evolution. The permanent exhibition is the best lesson of history and civilization presenting aspects of political, urban and intellectual life along with important events and personalities.
